Temporal connectors in Italian

Temporal connectors help you narrate events in sequence. In Italian, they typically appear at the start of a sentence or between two clauses.

Chronological order

prima → first : Prima siamo arrivati al locale. (First we arrived at the bar.)
poi / dopo → then / after : Poi abbiamo ordinato da bere. (Then we ordered drinks.)
alla fine → in the end : Alla fine tutti si sono divertiti. (In the end everyone had fun.)
infine → finally : Infine siamo tornati a casa. (Finally we went home.)

Sudden changes

improvvisamente → suddenly : Improvvisamente è andata via la luce. (Suddenly the power went out.)
all'improvviso → all of a sudden : All'improvviso ha iniziato a piovere. (All of a sudden it started raining.)
a un certo punto → at some point : A un certo punto qualcuno ha gridato. (At some point someone shouted.)

Duration and simultaneity

mentre → while : Mentre mangiavamo, è arrivato Marco. (While we were eating, Marco arrived.)
durante → during : Durante la festa, tutti ballavano. (During the party, everyone was dancing.)
nel frattempo → in the meantime : Nel frattempo io preparavo il caffè. (In the meantime I was making coffee.)

Passato prossimo + imperfetto together

When narrating, you often use both tenses together:

Imperfetto = the background, the ongoing situation
Passato prossimo = the event that happens

💬 Example: "Mentre dormivo, è suonato il telefono." (While I was sleeping, the phone rang.)
💬 Example: "Pioveva forte quando siamo usciti dal cinema." (It was raining heavily when we left the cinema.)
