Expressing Rules and Compromises
In shared living situations, you need language for setting rules, expressing obligations, and reaching compromises.
Expressing rules with चाहिए / होना चाहिए:
- किचन इस्तेमाल के बाद साफ होना चाहिए। — The kitchen should be clean after use.
- रात दस बजे के बाद शोर नहीं होना चाहिए। — There shouldn't be noise after 10 pm.
Expressing turns / shared duties:
- इस हफ्ते मेरी बारी है बर्तन धोने की। — This week it's my turn to wash the dishes.
- हम बारी-बारी से सफाई करेंगे। — We'll clean in turns.
Reaching a compromise with तो / लेकिन:
- अगर तुम सुबह नहाते हो, तो मैं रात को नहाऊँगा। — If you shower in the morning, I'll shower at night.
- मैं खाना बना सकता हूँ, लेकिन बर्तन तुम्हें धोने होंगे। — I can cook, but you'll have to wash the dishes.
Expressing agreement on rules:
- हम सब मिलकर यह तय करेंगे। — We'll all decide this together.
- इस बारे में एक समझौता होना चाहिए। — There should be an agreement on this.
Use होना चाहिए for impersonal rules and चाहिए for personal obligations.

Typowe błędy
किचन साफ होना है।किचन साफ होना चाहिए।होना है means it is going to be / is scheduled to be. होना चाहिए expresses a rule or obligation (should be).
इस हफ्ते मैं बारी है सफाई की।इस हफ्ते मेरी बारी है सफाई करने की।बारी requires the possessive मेरी/तुम्हारी, and the following verb uses the infinitive with की: सफाई करने की.
अगर तुम खाना बनाओ तो मैं बर्तन धोना।अगर तुम खाना बनाओ, तो मैं बर्तन धोऊँगा।The result clause needs a future tense verb (धोऊँगा), not an infinitive.
