At the Market — Quantities and How Much / How Many
Asking how much / how many:
- कितना? — How much? (masculine singular)
- कितनी? — How much? (feminine singular)
- कितने? — How many? (plural / masculine oblique)
कितना agrees with the noun it refers to:
- दूध कितना है? — How much milk is there?
- सब्ज़ियाँ कितनी हैं? — How many vegetables are there?
- आम कितने हैं? — How many mangoes are there?
Asking the price:
- यह कितने का है? — How much does this cost? (lit. this is of how many?)
- एक किलो कितने का है? — How much is one kilo?
- टमाटर कितने रुपये किलो है? — How many rupees per kilo for tomatoes?
Asking for a quantity:
- मुझे एक किलो आलू चाहिए। — I need one kilo of potatoes.
- आधा किलो दे दीजिए। — Please give half a kilo.
- थोड़े और देंगे? — Can you give a little more?
Bargaining:
- यह बहुत महंगा है। — This is very expensive.
- थोड़ा कम करो। — Reduce a little (the price).
- ठीक है, ले लेते हैं। — Okay, we'll take it.
