Non-violent communication (GFK) in German follows a four-step structure using specific Wenn/Dann patterns.

The NVC structure: 1. Observation (Beobachtung): Wenn ich sehe, dass... (When I see that...) 2. Feeling (Gefühl): ...fühle ich mich... (...I feel...) 3. Need (Bedürfnis): ...weil ich... brauche. (...because I need...) 4. Request (Bitte): Könntest du bitte...? (Could you please...?)

Complete example: Wenn ich sehe, dass du dein Handy während unseres Gesprächs benutzt, fühle ich mich nicht respektiert, weil ich Aufmerksamkeit brauche. Könntest du bitte das Handy weglegen?

Key grammar points:

  • The Wenn-clause uses verb-final position: Wenn ich sehe, dass du...
  • Feelings use sich fühlen + past participle: Ich fühle mich verletzt/ignoriert/respektiert.
  • Needs use brauchen: Ich brauche Verständnis/Respekt/Sicherheit.
  • Requests use Konjunktiv II for politeness: Könntest du...? / Wärst du bereit...?

Avoiding Du-Botschaften (You-messages) is key: say Ich fühle mich... instead of Du bist immer...

Zwroty

  • Wenn ich sehe, dass...State an observation
  • Dann fühle ich mich...Express a feeling
  • Weil ich... brauche.Express a need
  • Könntest du bitte...?Make a request
  • Wärst du bereit,...?Show willingness
  • Habe ich richtig verstanden, dass...?Active listening
  • Ich schätze es, wenn du...Express appreciation
  • Mir ist aufgefallen, dass...Avoid blame

Typowe błędy

  • Wenn ich sehe, dass du benutzt dein Handy...
Wenn ich sehe, dass du dein Handy benutzt...

In a dass-clause, the verb goes to the end: du dein Handy benutzt.

  • Ich fühle mich nicht respektieren.
    Ich fühle mich nicht respektiert.

Sich fühlen takes a past participle (respektiert), not an infinitive.

  • Ich brauche dass du zuhörst.
    Ich brauche, dass du zuhörst.

A comma is needed before the dass-clause after brauchen.

  • Kannst du bitte das Handy weglegen?
Könntest du bitte das Handy weglegen?

In NVC, requests use Konjunktiv II (könntest) for a gentler, non-demanding tone.

  • Ich fühle, dass du mich nicht respektierst.
    Ich fühle mich nicht respektiert.

NVC avoids interpretations of others. Express YOUR feeling, not what the other person does.
