Relative clauses (Relativsätze) let you add information about a noun. The relative pronoun must match the gender and number of the noun it refers to, while its case depends on its role in the relative clause.

  • die (feminine): Die Frau, die das Foto geteilt hat, ist Journalistin. (The woman who shared the photo is a journalist.)
  • das (neuter): Das Kind, das Videos schaut, ist müde. (The child that watches videos is tired.)
  • die (plural): Die Leute, die online sind, wissen alles. (The people who are online know everything.)

Key rules:

  • The relative clause is set off by commas
