Non-Violent Communication in French

The Four Steps of NVC (CNV)

Non-violent communication follows four steps that require specific grammatical structures in French.

1. Observation (without judgment):

Quand je vois que tu ne réponds pas à mes messages... — When I see you don't reply to my messages...

2. Feeling (using emotion vocabulary):

...je me sens ignoré(e) et blessé(e). — ...I feel ignored and hurt.

3. Need (expressing underlying needs):

J'ai besoin de sentir que je compte pour toi. — I need to feel that I matter to you.

4. Request (using the conditional for politeness):

Est-ce que tu pourrais me répondre dans la journée ? — Could you reply to me during the day?

Concession Structures

B2 communication requires acknowledging the other person's perspective:

  • Bien que + subj. — Although: Bien que je comprenne ta position...
  • Même si + indic. — Even if: Même si c'est difficile, essayons.
  • Certes... mais — Certainly... but: Certes, tu as raison, mais...
  • J'entends que... — I hear that...: J'entends que tu es fatigué.

"Je" Statements vs. "Tu" Accusations

Replace accusatory "tu" with empathetic "je":

  • Avoid: Tu ne m'écoutes jamais ! (accusation)
  • Prefer: Je ne me sens pas écouté(e). (observation + feeling)

Requesting Without Demanding

Use the conditional to soften requests:

Je souhaiterais qu'on en parle calmement. — I would like us to talk about it calmly.

Il me serait agréable que tu fasses un effort. — I would appreciate it if you made an effort.
