Film criticism in French uses compound relative pronouns (lequel, auquel, dont) to create complex, elegant sentences.
Compound relative pronouns:
- lequel/laquelle/lesquels/lesquelles — which (after prepositions)
- auquel/à laquelle/auxquels/auxquelles — to which
- duquel/de laquelle — of/from which (formal alternative to dont)
Examples in film criticism:
- Le film dans lequel il joue est un chef-d'œuvre. (The film in which he acts is a masterpiece.)
- La scène à laquelle je pense est inoubliable. (The scene I'm thinking of is unforgettable.)
- Le réalisateur dont je parle a gagné un César. (The director I'm talking about won a César.)
Non-restrictive relative clauses (adding extra info):
- Ce film, lequel a coûté des millions, a été un échec. (This film, which cost millions, was a failure.)
- L'actrice, dont le talent est reconnu, brille dans ce rôle. (The actress, whose talent is recognized, shines in this role.)
These structures make your film reviews sound polished and sophisticated.

Le réalisateur duquel je parleLe réalisateur dont je parleFor parler de, use dont (simpler) rather than duquel for people.
Un chef d'oeuvreUn chef-d'œuvreThe correct spelling uses a hyphen and the ligature œ.
C'est le film que j'ai le plus aiméeC'est le film que j'ai le plus aiméThe past participle agrees with the preceding direct object que (= le film, masculine singular), so it's aimé, not the feminine aimée.
