Talking About Your Job
In French, there are two main ways to say what your job is.
Je suis + profession (no article!)
Unlike English, French does not use an article before the profession:
Je suis ingénieur. — I am an engineer.
Elle est infirmière. — She is a nurse.
Je travaille comme...
You can also say what you work as:
Je travaille comme comptable. — I work as an accountant.
Il travaille comme serveur. — He works as a waiter.
Feminine Forms of Professions
Many professions change form for feminine:
- directeur → directrice
- infirmier → infirmière
- avocat → avocate
- ingénieur → ingénieure
Some stay the same: comptable, journaliste, dentiste.
Mon père est directeur et ma mère est avocate.
