Talking About Language Learning
Depuis + Duration
Use depuis to say how long you've been doing something (action started in the past and continues now):
- J'apprends le français depuis deux ans. — I've been learning French for two years.
- Je vis en France depuis six mois. — I've been living in France for six months.
Note: French uses present tense with depuis (not past tense like English).
Pour + Infinitive (Purpose)
Use pour + infinitive to express purpose:
- J'écoute des podcasts pour améliorer ma compréhension. — I listen to podcasts to improve my understanding.
- Je pratique tous les jours pour progresser. — I practise every day to progress.
Expressing Ability
- Je comprends bien l'écrit. — I understand written French well.
- J'ai du mal à comprendre quand on parle vite. — I have trouble understanding when people speak fast.
- Je me débrouille en français. — I get by in French.
