Relative Clauses with die/dat & Expressing Rules
Dutch uses die and dat as relative pronouns, similar to "who/which/that" in English. The choice depends on the gender of the antecedent:
- die → for *de*-words (common gender) and all plurals
- dat → for *het*-words (neuter gender)
Examples:
- *De huisgenoot die altijd kookt, is Marco.* (The housemate who always cooks is Marco.)
- *Het klusje dat niemand wil doen, is afwassen.* (The chore that nobody wants to do is washing up.)
- *De regels die we hebben afgesproken, zijn duidelijk.* (The rules we agreed on are clear.)
Word order in relative clauses: The verb goes to the end of the clause:
- *De huisgenoot die elke dag kookt...*
Expressing Rules and Obligations
To state house rules, use these structures:
- Je moet... (You must...) — *Je moet de keuken schoon achterlaten.*
- Je mag niet... (You may not...) — *Je mag niet na middernacht lawaai maken.*
- Het is de afspraak dat... (The agreement is that...) — *Het is de afspraak dat iedereen zijn bord afwast.*
- Iedereen wordt verwacht om... (Everyone is expected to...) — *Iedereen wordt verwacht om bij te dragen.*
