Conditional 2: zou/zouden for Hypotheticals

The conditional mood in Dutch uses zou (singular) and zouden (plural) + infinitive to express hypothetical situations, polite requests, and wishes.

Formation

Uses in Negotiation

1. Polite requests:

Zou u de prijs kunnen verlagen? (Could you lower the price?)
Zouden we een afspraak kunnen maken? (Could we make an appointment?)

2. Hypothetical proposals:

Ik zou 10% korting kunnen geven als u meer bestelt. (I could give 10% discount if you order more.)
Wat zou u doen als we het contract verlengen? (What would you do if we extend the contract?)

3. Softened opinions:

Ik zou zeggen dat dit een eerlijk aanbod is. (I would say this is a fair offer.)

If-clauses with als

Als u akkoord gaat, zou ik de overeenkomst vandaag kunnen tekenen. (If you agree, I could sign the agreement today.)
Als we zouden samenwerken, zou dat voordelig zijn. (If we were to work together, that would be beneficial.)
