Talking About Your Job + Separable Verbs
Saying what you do
In Dutch, you can describe your job in two ways:
- Ik ben + profession: Ik ben leraar (I am a teacher)
- Ik werk als + profession: Ik werk als arts (I work as a doctor)
Note: Unlike English, Dutch does not use an article (a/an) after "ik ben": Ik ben kok (not ~~Ik ben een kok~~).
Separable verbs (scheidbare werkwoorden)
Many Dutch verbs are separable: they split into two parts in main clauses.
- opbellen (to call): Ik bel je op → I call you
- meenemen (to bring along): Ik neem het mee → I bring it along
- samenwerken (to collaborate): We werken goed samen → We collaborate well
The pattern
In a main clause, the prefix goes to the end of the sentence:
- Ik bel mijn collega op
- Zij neemt haar laptop mee
Example: "Ik werk als ingenieur en ik werk samen met een groot team." → "I work as an engineer and I collaborate with a big team."
