Telling a Story: Time Connectors
When narrating events in Dutch, you use time connectors to link events together and create a clear sequence.
Key time connectors
- Eerst → First (start of the story)
- Toen → Then (next event)
- Daarna → After that
- Uiteindelijk → Finally, eventually
Example: "Eerst hebben we gegeten. Toen zijn we naar het park gegaan. Daarna hebben we gefietst. Uiteindelijk zijn we naar huis gegaan."
Word order after toen
When toen starts a sentence, the verb comes right after it (inversion):
- Toen ging ik naar huis → Then I went home
- Toen was het al laat → Then it was already late
Combining perfect and imperfect
In stories, you often mix both tenses:
- Perfect for actions: Ik heb gekookt (I cooked)
- Imperfect for descriptions: Het was warm (It was warm)
Example: "Het was een mooie dag. Eerst hebben we gewandeld. Toen was het tijd voor lunch."
