Dutch recipes use the imperative (command form), which is simply the verb stem: Snijd de uien (Cut the onions), Roer goed (Stir well). For separable verbs in the imperative, the prefix separates: toevoegen → Voeg zout toe (Add salt), opwarmen → Warm de soep op (Heat the soup). Sequence words are essential: eerst (first), dan/daarna (then), vervolgens (next), ten slotte (finally). Eerst snijd je de groenten, dan bak je ze in de pan (First you cut the vegetables, then you fry them in the pan). Note: recipes often use je (you) instead of pure imperative.
