Question words

Dutch question words often start with w:

  • Wat → What (Wat is je naam?)
  • Wie → Who (Wie is dat?)
  • Waar → Where (Waar kom je vandaan?)
  • Hoe → How (Hoe heet je?)

Subject pronouns

  • jij / je → you (informal)
  • u → you (formal)

Example: "Hoe heet je?" = What is your name? (literally: How are you called?)

The verb "heten" (to be called)

  • ik heet → I am called
  • jij heet → you are called
  • hij/zij heet → he/she is called

Tip: Dutch uses "heten" (to be called) more than "zijn" (to be) for names. Say "Ik heet Anna" rather than "Ik ben Anna" — both work, but "heten" is more natural.

Typowe błędy

  • Wat is je naam?
    Hoe heet je?

    While not grammatically wrong, Dutch people naturally say "Hoe heet je?" (How are you called?) rather than "Wat is je naam?".

  • Ik heet uit Nederland
    Ik kom uit Nederland

    "Heten" means to be called (for names). For origin, use "komen uit" (to come from).

  • Mijn naam ben Anna
    Mijn naam is Anna

    "Naam" (name) is third person, so it takes "is", not "ben". "Ben" is only for "ik".

  • Hij heten Jan
    Hij heet Jan

    The verb "heten" conjugates to "heet" for hij/zij. Don't use the infinitive form.

  • Ik kom van Nederland
    Ik kom uit Nederland

    For countries, use "uit" (from/out of), not "van". "Van" is for other contexts.
