"Hebben" with een/geen
To say you have or don't have a pet:
- Ik heb een hond → I have a dog
- Ik heb geen kat → I don't have a cat
"Geen" is the negative of "een" — it means "no / not a":
- een hond → geen hond (no dog)
- een huisdier → geen huisdier (no pet)
Articles: de/het/een
Every Dutch noun has a gender that determines its article:
- de hond (the dog) — common gender
- het konijn (the rabbit) — neuter
- de kat (the cat) — common gender
- het dier (the animal) — neuter
With "een" (a/an), there's no difference:
- een hond, een konijn — always "een"
Tip: You must memorize whether each noun is "de" or "het". When in doubt, "de" is more common (~65% of nouns).
