Describing how something was
In Chinese, adjectives can directly describe a past state without any special verb change. The key is the time expression.
Using adjectives to describe past states
- 那次旅行很顺利。(Nà cì lǚxíng hěn shùnlì.) — That trip went very smoothly.
- 那时候天气很好。(Nà shíhou tiānqì hěn hǎo.) — At that time the weather was great.
- 演出很精彩。(Yǎnchū hěn jīngcǎi.) — The performance was wonderful.
Time anchors for past context
Use these to anchor your description in the past:
- 那时候 (nà shíhou) — at that time
- 以前 (yǐqián) — before / in the past
- 小时候 (xiǎoshíhou) — when I was a child
Expressing feelings about past events
- 我很开心。(Wǒ hěn kāixīn.) — I was very happy.
- 我感到紧张。(Wǒ gǎndào jǐnzhāng.) — I felt nervous.
- 那次经历很难忘。(Nà cì jīnglì hěn nánwàng.) — That experience was unforgettable.
Tip: Chinese adjectives serve as predicates without needing a "to be" verb (是). Just use 很 or another intensifier.
