Talking About Family
In Chinese, family relationships have very specific terms that distinguish age order and which side of the family. This is different from English.
The 的 (de) possessive particle
Use 的 to show possession, like "of" or "'s" in English.
- 我的爸爸 (wǒ de bàba) → my dad
- 你的家人 (nǐ de jiārén) → your family
In casual speech, 的 can be dropped after pronouns:
- 我妈妈 (wǒ māma) → my mom (natural spoken form)
有 (yǒu) — to have
Use 有 to talk about what you have, including family members.
- 我有一个哥哥。 (Wǒ yǒu yī gè gēgē.) → I have one older brother.
- 我没有姐姐。 (Wǒ méiyǒu jiějie.) → I don't have an older sister.
Note: The negative of 有 is always 没有 (méiyǒu), never 不有.
💬 Example: "我有爸爸、妈妈和一个妹妹。" → "I have a dad, mom, and one younger sister."
