The art of questioning in Spanish relies on two types of questions: rhetorical and Socratic. Rhetorical questions do not expect an answer and serve to persuade: ¿Acaso no es evidente que la premisa es falsa? (Is it not obvious that the premise is false?). Socratic questions guide reasoning step by step: Si aceptamos esta suposición, ¿qué se deduce? (If we accept this assumption, what follows?). For inductive reasoning: A partir de estos datos, se puede inferir que... (From this data, one can infer that...). Deductive reasoning follows the opposite logic: Si la premisa es verdadera, entonces la conclusión es lógica (If the premise is true, then the conclusion is logical). "Cuestionar" means to challenge or call into question, not simply to ask a question. Mastering these forms enables you to participate in intellectual debates with rigor and precision at the C1 level.

Expressions

  • ¿Acaso no es evidente?Asking a persuasive rhetorical question
  • Si aceptamos esta premisa, entonces...Building a deductive argument
  • A partir de los datos, se infiere que...Drawing an inductive conclusion
  • Cuestiono la validez de ese argumentoChallenging the validity of an argument
  • ¿En qué te basas para afirmar eso?Asking for the basis of a claim
  • Razonemos paso a pasoProposing methodical reasoning

Common mistakes

  • Infero que la premisa es falsa
Infiero que la premisa es falsa

Inferir has a stem change e > ie: infiero

  • Cuestiono una pregunta
    Planteo una pregunta

Cuestionar means to challenge. Plantear means to pose a question

  • La deducción es lógica basada en datos
La inducción es lógica basada en datos

Induction starts from data. Deduction starts from principles

  • Razonamos que es incorrecto
    Concluimos que es incorrecto

Razonar describes the process. Concluir states the result

  • El argumento no tiene lógica
    El argumento no es lógico
