# Negative Imperative in Russian: Cybersecurity Warnings
Cybersecurity is full of warnings and commands. Russian makes a crucial distinction between two types of negative imperative.
Imperfective Imperative = Don't (ever / in general)
Use the imperfective imperative after не for general prohibitions:
- Не открывай подозрительные ссылки. — Don't open suspicious links. (ever)
— Don't use the same password for all sites.
— Don't trust unknown emails.
Perfective Imperative = Be careful not to (specific risk)
Use the perfective imperative after не to warn about a specific, imminent mistake:
- Не открой этот файл! — Don't open that file! (right now, warning)
— Don't forget to enable 2FA.
Important: Aspect Changes Meaning
- Не + imperfective: Не делай (general: never do) / Не открывай (don't open, ever)
- Не + perfective: Не сделай (specific: careful not to do) / Не открой (don't open it now!)
