Shopping at the Market

Asking for Products

Queria… (I would like…) — polite way to ask:

  • *Queria meio quilo de tomates.* — I'd like half a kilo of tomatoes.
  • *Queria um bocado de queijo.* — I'd like a bit of cheese.

Pode dar-me…? (Can you give me…?) — polite request:

  • *Pode dar-me dois pães?* — Can you give me two loaves of bread?

Quantities and Packaging

  • um quilo de — a kilo of
  • meio quilo de — half a kilo of
  • 200 gramas de — 200 grams of
  • uma dúzia de — a dozen
  • um litro de — a litre of
  • um ramo de — a bunch of

Asking Prices

  • *Quanto é?* — How much is it?
  • *Quanto custam os tomates?* — How much are the tomatoes?
  • *A quanto está o quilo de…?* — How much is a kilo of…?

Paying

  • *São 5 euros e 30 cêntimos.* — That's 5 euros and 30 cents.
  • *Tem troco de 20?* — Do you have change for 20?

Expressions

  • Queria meio quilo de tomates.I'd like half a kilo of tomatoes
  • A quanto está o quilo?How much is the kilo? — Asking the price per kilo
  • Mais alguma coisa?Anything else? — What the seller asks you
  • É tudo, obrigado/a.That's all, thank you — Finishing your order
  • Pode pôr num saco?Can you put it in a bag? — Requesting packaging
  • Fique com o troco.Keep the change

Common mistakes

  • Quero meio quilo tomates.
    Queria meio quilo de tomates.

    Use queria (polite) and add the preposition de: meio quilo DE tomates

  • Quanto custa os tomates?
    Quanto custam os tomates?

    Tomates is plural — the verb must agree: custam, not custa

  • Pode dar-me dois pão?
    Pode dar-me dois pães?

    After dois (two), the noun must be plural: pães, not pão

  • São cinco euros e trinta cêntimo.
    São cinco euros e trinta cêntimos.

    After trinta (thirty), cêntimos must be plural

  • Queria um pouco queijo.
    Queria um pouco de queijo.

    Um pouco requires the preposition de: um pouco DE queijo
