Polish Romanticism (1820s-1860s) was inseparable from the national liberation struggle. The Three Bards - Mickiewicz, Slowacki, and Krasinski - created works imbued with Messianism: Poland as the Christ of Nations, destined to suffer and then redeem humanity. Mickiewicz wrote Dziady and Pan Tadeusz; Slowacki explored metaphysics and mysticism; Krasinski penned Nieboska komedia. The Promethean hero sacrifices himself for the collective. Understanding this context is essential for reading Polish literature.
