Building Arguments in Polish

In Polish debates, aspect choice is crucial. Use the imperfective to describe ongoing processes and the perfective for completed results:

  • Dyskutowaliśmy godzinami (impf.) — We debated for hours
  • Rozstrzygnęliśmy kwestię (pf.) — We settled the matter

Key conjunctions for arguments:

  • ponieważ / gdyż — because (formal)
  • skoro — since, given that
  • chociaż / mimo że — although
  • pod warunkiem że — provided that

Impersonal constructions with "się" add objectivity:

  • Należy podkreślić, że... — It should be noted that...
  • Można twierdzić, że... — One may argue that...

Expressions

  • Chciałbym podkreślić, że...I would like to emphasize that...
  • Mój argument opiera się na...My argument is based on...
  • Trudno zaprzeczyć, że...It is hard to deny that...
  • Z drugiej strony należy zauważyć...On the other hand, note that...
  • W świetle tych faktów...In light of these facts...

Common mistakes

  • Debatowałem z nim argumenty.
    Debatowałem z nim o argumentach.

debatować requires preposition o + locative, not a direct object

  • Mój teza jest słuszna.
    Moja teza jest słuszna.

teza is feminine so the possessive must be moja not mój

  • Obalił argument używając logikę.
    Obalił argument, używając logiki.

The gerund używając governs genitive case: logiki, not accusative logikę
