Irregular Past Forms and Expressing Enjoyment
Some of the most common Japanese verbs have irregular た-forms that you need to memorize.
Key irregular verbs
- する → した (did)
- 来る (くる) → 来た (きた) (came)
- 行く (いく) → 行った (いった) (went)
Note: 行く follows the く→いた pattern but doubles the っ: 行った, not 行いた.
Expressing enjoyment: 楽しかった
To say something was fun, use the い-adjective 楽しい in its past form:
- 楽しい → 楽しかった (tanoshikatta — was fun)
- 楽しくなかった (tanoshikunakatta — was not fun)
Example: 週末に海に行った。とても楽しかった！ (Shuumatsu ni umi ni itta. Totemo tanoshikatta!) — I went to the beach on the weekend. It was very fun!
Talking about your weekend
- 週末は何をしましたか？ — What did you do on the weekend?
- 友達が来た。 — A friend came over.
- 写真をたくさん撮った。 — I took many photos.
Expressions
- 週末は何をしましたか？Ask about someone's weekend
- 海に行きました。Say you went to the beach
- 友達が来ました。Say a friend came over
- 写真をたくさん撮りました。Say you took many photos
- すごく楽しかったです。Say it was really fun
- また行きたいです。Say you want to go again
Common mistakes
友達が来るた。友達が来た。来る is irregular: the ta-form is 来た (kita), not 来るた
週末に遊びた。週末に遊んだ。遊ぶ ends in ぶ, so the ta-form is 遊んだ, not 遊びた
写真を取った。写真を撮った。Use the kanji 撮る for taking photos, not 取る (to take/grab)
とても楽しいだった。とても楽しかった。い-adjectives form past tense with -かった, not い + だった
海で行った。海に行った。Use the particle に for destination with 行く, not で
