Expressing rules and compromises in shared living

In shared living, you need to establish rules and compromises. Italian offers several structures for this.

Abbiamo concordato di... (We agreed to...)

  • Abbiamo concordato di dividere le spese in parti uguali. (We agreed to split expenses equally.)
  • Abbiamo concordato di fare le faccende a turno. (We agreed to do chores on a rota.)

Mettiamoci d'accordo su... (Let's agree on...)

  • Mettiamoci d'accordo su come dividere le utenze. (Let's agree on how to split the bills.)
  • Mettiamoci d'accordo su gli orari in bagno. (Let's agree on the bathroom schedule.)

Expressing rules — must / must not

  • Bisogna rispettare la privacy degli altri. (We must respect others' privacy.)
  • Non è permesso fumare in casa. (Smoking indoors is not allowed.)
  • È importante che ognuno faccia la propria parte. (It is important that everyone does their part.)

Proposing a compromise

  • Potremmo fare a turno... → We could take turns...
  • Sarebbe equo se... → It would be fair if...
  • Come ci organizziamo per...? → How shall we organise... ?

Abbiamo concordato di dividere le spese

Concordare di requires di + infinitive, not che + indicative

  • Mettiamoci accordo su...
    Mettiamoci d'accordo su...

The full expression is mettersi d'accordo (with the apostrophe of di)

  • È importante che ognuno rispette
    È importante che ognuno rispetti

After è importante che, use the subjunctive: rispetti (not rispette)

  • Ognuno deve fare il suo parte
Ognuno deve fare la sua parte

Parte is feminine: la sua parte, not il suo parte

  • È importante che tutti rispettano le regole
È importante che tutti rispettino le regole

Correct use of subjunctive. Common error: rispettano instead of rispettino
