The passato prossimo — regular verbs

In Italian, the most common past tense for completed actions is the passato prossimo. If you speak English, think of it as similar to both "I ate" and "I have eaten."

How to form it

Auxiliary verb (avere/essere) in the present tense + past participle

Forming the past participle

  • Verbs ending in -are-ato : mangiare → mangiato, lavorare → lavorato, cucinare → cucinato
  • Verbs ending in -ere-uto : ricevere → ricevuto, credere → creduto, avere → avuto
  • Verbs ending in -ire-ito : dormire → dormito, finire → finito, capire → capito

With the auxiliary avere

Most verbs use avere (to have):

  • io : ho — Ho mangiato una pizza. (I ate a pizza.)
  • tu : hai — Hai lavorato ieri? (Did you work yesterday?)
  • lui/lei : ha — Ha dormito bene. (He/She slept well.)
  • noi : abbiamo — Abbiamo cucinato insieme. (We cooked together.)
  • voi : avete — Avete finito il libro? (Did you finish the book?)
  • loro : hanno — Hanno guardato un film. (They watched a film.)

With the auxiliary essere

Some verbs (movement, change of state) use essere (to be). The past participle then agrees with the subject in gender and number:

  • Sono andato al cinema. *(masculine singular)*
  • Sono andata al cinema. *(feminine singular)*
  • Siamo usciti con gli amici. *(masculine/mixed plural)*
  • Siamo uscite con le amiche. *(feminine plural)*

💬 Example: "Ieri ho mangiato una pizza e poi sono andato a dormire." *(Yesterday I ate a pizza and then I went to sleep.)*

💬 Example: "Maria ha comprato un libro e poi è andata a casa." *(Maria bought a book and then went home.)*

Tip

To know if a verb uses essere, think of movement verbs: andare (to go), venire (to come), uscire (to go out), partire (to leave), tornare (to return).

Expressions

  • Cosa hai fatto ieri?Ask what someone did yesterday
  • Ho dormito fino a tardi.Say you slept in late
  • Sono andato/a a...Say where you went

  • Ieri mattina ho...Telling what you did yesterday morning
  • Dopo pranzo sono uscito/a.Saying you went out after lunch
  • Mi sono divertito/a molto.Expressing that you had a lot of fun

Common mistakes

  • Ho andato al cinema.
    Sono andato al cinema.

andare takes essere as auxiliary, not avere

  • Ho mangiata una pizza.
    Ho mangiato una pizza.

with avere, the past participle does not agree with the subject

  • Mi alzato tardi.
    Mi sono alzato tardi.

reflexive verbs always use essere as auxiliary

  • Ho fatto ieri la spesa.
    Ho fatto la spesa ieri.

time adverbs usually go at the end of the sentence

  • Ieri ho andato al cinema.
    Ieri sono andato al cinema.

andare takes essere as its auxiliary, not avere

  • Ho visto un film e ho piaciuto.
Ho visto un film e mi è piaciuto.

piacere requires an indirect pronoun (mi) and uses essere
