Advanced nominalisation in German

Scientific and economic German relies heavily on nominalisation: turning verbs into nouns to pack more information into fewer words.

From verb to noun:

  • investieren → die Investition → Die Investition in erneuerbare Energien steigt.
  • wachsen → das Wachstum → Das Wachstum stagniert.

Nominalisation suffixes:

  • -ung: die Lockerung, die Globalisierung, die Regulierung
  • -keit/-heit: die Nachhaltigkeit, die Sicherheit
  • -tion: die Inflation, die Rezession

Complex noun phrases:

  • Die von der EZB beschlossene quantitative Lockerung der Geldpolitik... → The quantitative easing of monetary policy decided by the ECB...

This style is essential in reports, articles, and economic discourse.
