To give health advice in German, use sollte (should) — the Konjunktiv II of *sollen*.

Positive advice:

  • *Du solltest mehr Wasser trinken.* (You should drink more water.)
  • *Man sollte regelmäßig Sport treiben.* (One should exercise regularly.)
  • *Du solltest früher ins Bett gehen.* (You should go to bed earlier.)

Negative advice:

  • *Du solltest nicht so viel Zucker essen.* (You shouldn't eat so much sugar.)
  • *Man sollte nicht zu viel arbeiten.* (One shouldn't work too much.)

Impersonal advice with "man":

Using *man* (one/people) makes advice sound general and less personal:

  • *Man sollte auf eine ausgewogene Ernährung achten.* (One should pay attention to a balanced diet.)
  • *Man sollte sich jeden Tag etwas bewegen.* (One should move a bit every day.)

Note: *sollte* is conjugated: ich/er/sie/es sollte, du solltest, wir/sie/Sie sollten.

Expressions

  • Du solltest mehr schlafen.Giving sleep advice
  • Man sollte sich gesund ernähren.General nutrition advice
  • Du solltest Stress vermeiden.Recommending stress reduction
  • Achte auf deine Gesundheit!Warning about health
  • Bewegung ist sehr wichtig.Emphasizing exercise

Common mistakes

  • Du sollst mehr Wasser trinken.
    Du solltest mehr Wasser trinken.

For advice, use solltest (Konjunktiv II), not sollst (indicative = obligation).

  • Man sollte nicht zu viel zu arbeiten.
Man sollte nicht zu viel arbeiten.

After sollte, use the bare infinitive without zu.

  • Du solltest auf dein Gesundheit achten.
Du solltest auf deine Gesundheit achten.

Gesundheit is feminine — use deine, not dein.

  • Man sollte sich bewegen jeden Tag.
Man sollte sich jeden Tag bewegen.

The infinitive bewegen goes to the end in a modal verb construction.

  • Du solltest esst weniger Zucker.
    Du solltest weniger Zucker essen.

After solltest, the main verb stays in the infinitive (essen), not conjugated.
