  • Am See gibt es Fische. (At the lake there are fish.)

Können for animal abilities:

  • Fische können schwimmen. (Fish can swim.)
  • Bären können gut klettern. (Bears can climb well.)

Describing a habitat:

  • Rehe leben im Wald. (Deer live in the forest.)
  • Wölfe leben in Gruppen. (Wolves live in packs.)

Watch the plural of animals: der Vogel → die Vögel, der Bär → die Bären, der Wolf → die Wölfe, der Fuchs → die Füchse.

Common mistakes

  • Es gibt viele Tier im Wald.
Es gibt viele Tiere im Wald.

In the plural, «Tier» takes an -e ending: «Tiere».

  • Der Vogel können fliegen.
    Der Vogel kann fliegen.

With a singular subject (der Vogel), use «kann», not «können».

  • Es gibt einen großen Bären in den Wald.
Es gibt einen großen Bären im Wald.

«Im Wald» (in the forest) uses dative: in + dem = im.

  • Die Fische kann gut schwimmen.
    Die Fische können gut schwimmen.

Plural subject (die Fische) requires the plural modal verb form: «können».

  • Ich habe ein Fuchs gesehen.
    Ich habe einen Fuchs gesehen.

«Sehen» takes the accusative. «Fuchs» is masculine → einen Fuchs.
