Common mistakes

  With müssen, the main verb goes to the infinitive at the end

• ✗Du musst nicht hier rauchen.
  ✓Du darfst hier nicht rauchen.

  For prohibition, use nicht dürfen, not nicht müssen

• ✗Ich wasche die Teller ab heute.
  ✓Ich wasche heute die Teller ab.

  Time comes before the object, separable prefix at the end

• ✗Wir müssen einkaufen zu gehen.
  ✓Wir müssen einkaufen gehen.

  After müssen, no zu before the infinitive

• ✗Ich staub sauge die Wohnung.
  ✓Ich sauge die Wohnung (staub).

  Staubsaugen is separable: sauge...staub
