To tell a story well in French, you need time connectors to organize your events in order.

Sequencing Words

Use these to structure your narrative:

• D'abord — first
• Ensuite / Puis — then
• Après — after that
• Soudain — suddenly
• Enfin / Finalement — finally

D'abord, j'ai pris le bus. Ensuite, je suis arrivé au parc. Soudain, il a commencé à pleuvoir. Enfin, je suis rentré à la maison.

Before and During

• Avant — before: Avant le dîner, j'ai fait du sport.
• Pendant — during: Pendant le film, j'ai dormi.

Building a Narrative

Combine connectors with passé composé to create a smooth story:
