Improvising in Dutch requires a toolkit of fillers and reformulation strategies that buy you thinking time while sounding eloquent.

Intelligent fillers (not uhm!):

  • Dat is een terechte opmerking... (That is a valid remark...)
  • Laat ik het zo formuleren... (Let me put it this way...)
  • Als ik het goed begrijp, vraagt u eigenlijk... (If I understand correctly, you are actually asking...)

Reformulating: Met andere woorden... (In other words...), Wat ik eigenlijk bedoel, is... (What I actually mean is...), Om het anders te zeggen... (To put it differently...).

Picking up the thread: Waar was ik gebleven? (Where was I?), Om terug te komen op mijn punt... (To return to my point...), De draad weer oppakkend... (Picking up the thread again...).

Acknowledging uncertainty: Uit het hoofd gezegd... (Off the top of my head...), Als ik me niet vergis... (If I am not mistaken...), Ik zou moeten nakijken, maar... (I would need to check, but...).

The key to improvisation is confidence. These phrases give you breathing room while maintaining your authority as a speaker.
