Time Prepositions in Dutch
Days of the week
Use op + day:
- Op maandag werk ik. (On Monday I work.)
- Op dinsdag en donderdag sport ik. (On Tuesday and Thursday I exercise.)
Days: maandag, dinsdag, woensdag, donderdag, vrijdag, zaterdag, zondag
Months
Use in + month:
- In januari is het koud. (In January it's cold.)
- Mijn verjaardag is in maart. (My birthday is in March.)
Months: januari, februari, maart, april, mei, juni, juli, augustus, september, oktober, november, december
Time of day: 's + time
- 's ochtends — in the morning
- 's middags — in the afternoon
- 's avonds — in the evening
- 's nachts — at night
Time words
- vandaag — today
- morgen — tomorrow
- gisteren — yesterday
- vorige week — last week
- volgende maand — next month
Tip: "Morgen" means both "tomorrow" and "morning". Context makes it clear!
Expressions
- Vandaag is het maandag.Today is Monday.
- Ik werk op dinsdag en donderdag.Saying which days you work.
- Mijn verjaardag is in januari.Saying which month your birthday is in.
- Wat is de datum vandaag?Asking for today's date.
- Tot morgen!See you tomorrow! (common goodbye)
- Vorige week was ik ziek.Referring to last week.
Common mistakes
Op januariIn januariUse "in" for months, "op" for days of the week.
Ik ga op de avond.Ik ga 's avonds.Use the contraction 's + time of day: 's ochtends, 's middags, 's avonds.
De maandagOp maandagDays don't need an article. Use "op" + day.
GisterGisterenThe full form "gisteren" is standard. "Gister" is informal but less common in writing.
