The Art of Storytelling in Chinese
A compelling story needs structure. In Chinese rhetoric, the classic 起承转合 (qi-cheng-zhuan-he) framework guides narrative flow:
- 起 (qi) — Opening: introduce the context and characters
- 承 (cheng) — Development: build the situation, add detail
- 转 (zhuan) — Turn: introduce a twist or complication
- 合 (he) — Resolution: tie everything together meaningfully
Building suspense: Use 悬念 by withholding key information. Signal it with phrases like 然而事情并不简单 (but things were not so simple) or 谁也没想到 (no one expected).
The power of 留白 (purposeful omission): Chinese narrative tradition values what is left unsaid. Not everything needs explaining — let the reader infer emotion and meaning from context.
Imagery (意象): Concrete images carry emotional weight. Instead of saying 她很伤心 (she was sad), describe 泪水沿着脸颊滑落 (tears sliding down her cheeks).
Expressions
- 话说当年……Opening a story: "It is said that back then..."
- 谁也没想到,事情竟会如此Expressing surprise at how events unfolded
- 就在这时,风云突变Signaling a dramatic turning point in the narrati
- 他欲言又止Describing hesitation: he wanted to speak but
- 不言而喻It goes without saying — for implicit meaning
- 余音绕梁Lingering impression, used to describe lasting
Common mistakes
他感到很悲伤。他的心像被什么压住了,喘不过气来。State the emotion directly instead of showing it through imagery — in storytelling, show, do not tell
突然,一切都改变了。就在这时,风云突变,谁也没有料到。Vague transition; use specific narrative markers to signal turning points
故事结束了。此后,他再未提起那段往事。Abrupt closure; end with implication or a lasting image rather than a flat statement
