The Formal Register in Spanish

Spanish has a rich formal and literary register still actively used in essays, speeches, and academic prose.

Literary Inversion

  • In elevated prose, subject-verb order is often inverted: "Dijo el autor" instead of "El autor dijo"
  • This inversion lends solemnity and elegance to discourse

The Subjunctive in Elevated Writing

  • The imperfect subjunctive in -se (dijese, hubiese) is preferred over -ra in literary texts
  • The future subjunctive (hubiere, dijere) survives in legal and solemn texts

Archaic Connectors Still in Use

  • Empero: equivalent to "sin embargo", highly literary
  • No obstante: more common but still formal
  • Ora...ora: alternating structure ("ora ríe, ora llora" — now laughing, now crying)
  • Amén de: in addition to (formal register)

When to Use This Register

  • Academic speeches and lectures
  • Literary essays and criticism
  • Official and legal correspondence
  • Never in everyday conversation (risks sounding pedantic)

표현

  • En lo que atañe aRegarding, as concerns (very formal)
  • Dicho sea de pasoBy the way, incidentally
  • Valga la redundanciaIf you'll pardon the redundancy
  • A la sazónAt that time (literary)

자주 하는 실수

  • Empero no estoy de acuerdo contigo
Sin embargo, no estoy de acuerdo contigo

Empero is too archaic for everyday speech; reserve it for formal writing

  • Si yo fuere rico, viajaría
    Si yo fuera rico, viajaría

The future subjunctive (fuere) is not used in common conditionals, only in legal or solemn contexts

  • El susodicho chico me llamó
    Ese chico me llamó

Susodicho is a legal/administrative term, inappropriate for casual language

  • Es menester que vienes
    Es menester que vengas

Menester requires the subjunctive, like all impersonal obligation expressions

  • Dísertó sobre el tema
    Disertó sobre el tema

Disertar is stressed on the second syllable, not the first — it is not a proparoxytone
