Verb + infinitive: me gusta + infinitive

In Spanish, to express what you like to do, you use gustar followed by an infinitive. But careful — gustar works differently from English! The thing you like is the subject:

  • Me gusta leer. → I like to read. (literally: "Reading pleases me.")
  • Te gusta cocinar. → You like to cook.
  • Le gusta bailar. → He/She likes to dance.

The verb gustar agrees with what follows it, not the person:

- Me gusta leer. (one activity)

- Me gustan los deportes. (plural noun)

Other verbs that work the same way: encantar (to love), interesar (to interest), apetecer (to fancy).

Example: "Me encanta dibujar." → "I love to draw."

Adverbs of frequency

To say how often you do something, use these adverbs — usually placed before the verb:

  • siempre → always
  • a menudo / frecuentemente → often
  • a veces → sometimes
  • casi nunca → hardly ever
  • nunca → never

Example: "A veces leo por la noche." → "Sometimes I read at night."

Example: "Nunca cocino los lunes." → "I never cook on Mondays."

자주 하는 실수

  • Yo gusto leer.
    Me gusta leer.

Gustar doesn't work like 'to like' - the thing liked is the subject. Use 'me gusta', not 'yo gusto'.

  • Me gusta los deportes.
    Me gustan los deportes.

When what you like is plural, gustar must be plural too: gustan, not gusta.

  • Me gusta mucho el leer.
    Me gusta mucho leer.

Don't use 'el' before infinitives after gustar - just use the infinitive directly.

  • Yo siempre gusto cocinar.
    Siempre me gusta cocinar.

The adverb of frequency goes before 'me gusta', and remember the indirect object pronoun 'me'.

  • Nunca no cocino.
    Nunca cocino.

In Spanish you don't use double negatives with 'nunca' before the verb.

  • Me gusta hacer la fotografía.
    Me gusta hacer fotografía.

Activities as hobbies generally don't take the article.
