Asking for directions
When you are lost in a Spanish-speaking city, you need to ask where things are. The key question is ¿Dónde está...? (Where is...?).
Prepositions of place
Spanish uses small phrases to describe where something is located:
- al lado de → next to
- entre → between
- enfrente de → in front of / across from
- cerca de → near
- lejos de → far from
- a la derecha de → to the right of
- a la izquierda de → to the left of
Giving directions
To tell someone where to go, use these key verbs:
- Gira a la derecha → Turn right
- Gira a la izquierda → Turn left
- Sigue recto → Go straight
- Cruza la calle → Cross the street
Example dialogue
— Perdone, ¿dónde está la plaza Mayor? — Sigue recto y gira a la derecha en el semáforo. La plaza está al lado de la iglesia.
