Native Speaker Traps in Russian
Even educated Russian native speakers make systematic errors. Understanding these traps will sharpen your grasp of the language and help you sound more precise than many natives.
The одеть / надеть Confusion
This is the most famous error in Russian. The rule is simple:
- надеть (на + деть) = to put something onto something/yourself: *Надень пальто* (Put on the coat)
- одеть = to dress someone else: *Одень ребёнка* (Dress the child)
Mnemonic: Надеть одежду, одеть Надежду — Put on clothes, dress Nadezhda.
The ложить Problem
The verb ложить does not exist in standard Russian. The correct imperfective is класть:
- класть / положить: *Клади книгу на стол* (Put the book on the table)
- Using *ложить* immediately marks you as uneducated
Stress Traps: звонИт
Many native speakers stress звОнит, but the normative literary form is звонИт (final syllable). Similarly: *включИт, облегчИт*.
Case Government Errors
- оплатить что (accusative, no preposition): *оплатить счёт* — NOT *оплатить за счёт*
- скучать по кому (dative): *скучаю по тебе* — NOT *скучаю по тебя* (though instrumental is increasingly accepted)
Non-Standard Pronouns
ихний/ихняя/ихнее — these possessive forms are common in speech but remain non-standard. Use их (their) in all written and formal contexts.
The обратно Trap
In some colloquial and regional speech, обратно is used to mean «again» (опять). This is non-standard: *Он обратно пришёл* should be *Он снова пришёл*.
