Russian Collocations: Sounding Natural at C1

Collocations are fixed word combinations where native speakers always use specific verbs or adjectives. Getting them wrong makes Russian sound unnatural.

Essential Verb-Noun Collocations

принимать решение / меры / участие (to take a decision / measures / part)
оказывать влияние / помощь / поддержку / давление (to exert influence / provide help / support / pressure)
проводить политику / реформы / исследование / время (to pursue a policy / conduct reforms / research / spend time)
нести ответственность / потери / службу (to bear responsibility / suffer losses / serve)
вносить вклад / изменения / поправки (to make a contribution / introduce changes / amendments)

Adjective-Noun Collocations

острая критика / проблема / дискуссия (sharp criticism / acute problem / heated discussion)
глубокое уважение / впечатление / понимание (deep respect / impression / understanding)
серьёзные последствия / опасения / намерения (serious consequences / concerns / intentions)

Key Rule

Never translate collocations word-for-word from your native language. «Делать решение» (make a decision) is wrong — use «принимать решение».

자주 하는 실수

принимать is the correct verb for decisions, not делать

оказывать is used for providing support, not давать

Она провела исследование.
проводить is used for conducting research, not производить
~~Он носит ответственность.~~
Он несёт ответственность.
нести (imperfective) is required, not носить

значительный sounds more natural than большой in formal collocations
