Speech Structure in Russian Public Speaking
Effective Russian public speaking follows structured principles adapted from both classical rhetoric and modern communication theory.
The Classic Three-Part Structure
1. Вступление (Introduction) Goal: Capture attention and establish relevance Techniques:
- *Риторический вопрос:* Что объединяет всех великих ораторов?
- *Статистика:* Каждый третий человек боится публичных выступлений больше, чем смерти.
- *Цитата:* Как сказал Цицерон: «Оратор тот, кто любой вопрос может изложить со знанием дела, с удовольствием, с достоинством.»
2. Основная часть (Main Body) Use clear transitions between points:
- *Прежде всего...* / *Во-первых...* (First of all...)
- *Переходя к следующему пункту...* (Moving to the next point...)
- *Как я уже отметил...* (As I mentioned earlier...)
3. Заключение (Conclusion) Summarize and call to action:
- *Подводя итог, хочу подчеркнуть...* (In summary, I want to emphasize...)
- *Призываю вас...* (I urge you to...)
Russian Oratorical Traditions
Russian public speaking has deep roots in Soviet-era rhetoric and pre-revolutionary traditions. Key features:
- Торжественность (solemnity) valued in formal contexts
- Народность (accessibility to the people) in political speech
- Эмоциональность (emotional engagement) expected from good speakers
Grammatical Focus: Participle Constructions in Speech
Using participial phrases adds sophistication:
- *Обращаясь к вам сегодня...* (Addressing you today...) — adverbial participle
- *Результаты, достигнутые нашей командой...* — participial phrase

자주 하는 실수
Позвольте начать от обзораПозвольте начать с обзораНачать takes с + genitive (begin with), not от + genitive.
Призываю вас принять участиеПризываю вас к участиюПризывать in formal speech takes к + dative noun, not the infinitive construction.
Подводя итог, я хочу сказать, что...Подводя итог, хочу подчеркнуть, что...The adverbial participle подводя agrees with the implicit subject of хочу; do not add я — it makes the construction redundant and less elegant.
На мой взгляд является правильнымНа мой взгляд, это правильноНа мой взгляд is a parenthetical phrase, followed by a full clause, not является + instrumental.
Обращаясь вам сегодняОбращаясь к вам сегодняОбращаться requires к + dative when addressing someone; the preposition к cannot be dropped.
Зрительный контакт с аудиторией создаёт диалогЗрительный контакт с аудиторией создаёт ощущение диалогаEye contact doesn't create dialogue itself but creates the feeling/impression of dialogue (ощущение диалога).
