Russian seasons use specific prepositions for time. Весной / летом / осенью / зимой (instrumental case without preposition) means "in spring/summer/autumn/winter". This is one of the most common uses of the instrumental for time.
Key constructions:
- Весной часто идёт дождь. — In spring it often rains. (instrumental season)
- Зимой бывают сильные морозы. — In winter there are hard frosts. (бывают = there tend to be)
- Какая сегодня погода? — What is the weather like today?
- На улице холодно / тепло / жарко. — It is cold / warm / hot outside. (impersonal)
- Можно ли купаться в реке летом? — Can one swim in the river in summer? (можно + infinitive)
- Нельзя ходить без шапки в мороз. — One must not go without a hat in the frost. (нельзя + infinitive)
For temperatures: градус мороза = degrees below zero; градус тепла = degrees above zero. «Минус пять» (minus five) or «пять градусов мороза» (five degrees of frost) are both used.

자주 하는 실수
В лете можно купаться.Летом можно купаться.Use the instrumental без preposition for seasons: лето → летом. Do not use «в + prepositional» for seasons.
Зимой нельзя ходить без тёплую одежду.Зимой нельзя ходить без тёплой одежды.«Без» always takes the genitive: тёплую одежду (accusative) → тёплой одежды (genitive).
Весной снег тает и цветы распускает.Весной снег тает и цветы распускаются.«Распускаться» is reflexive (flowers bloom on their own); use the reflexive form распускаются, not the transitive распускает.
На улице холодный.На улице холодно.Impersonal weather expressions use the neuter adverb form: холодно (not adjective холодный).
Осенью часто бывает дожди.Осенью часто бывают дожди.«Дожди» is plural, so бывать must agree in plural: бывают (not singular бывает).
