Handling Difficult Questions in Portuguese

At C1 level, you must be able to field challenging questions with grace, whether in a Q&A session, a debate, or a professional meeting.

Strategy 1: Acknowledge and Reframe

Accept the question's validity, then redirect it:

• *Agradeço a questão. Na verdade, o que está em causa é...* — I appreciate the question. In fact, what is at stake is...
• *Compreendo a sua preocupação. Permitam-me abordar isto de outro ângulo...* — I understand your concern. Allow me to approach this from another angle...

Strategy 2: The Partial Answer

When you cannot fully answer:

• *Posso responder parcialmente a essa questão...* — I can partially answer that question...
• *Sem ter todos os dados disponíveis, o que posso afirmar é...* — Without all the data available, what I can state is...

Strategy 3: Deflect Hostility

For provocative or hostile questions:

• *Respeito a sua perspetiva, embora não a partilhe...* — I respect your perspective, although I do not share it...
• *Essa é uma forma de ver a questão. Outra seria...* — That is one way of seeing the issue. Another would be...

Strategy 4: Buy Time

When genuinely stumped:

• *Essa questão merece uma resposta ponderada...* — That question deserves a considered answer...
• *Permitam-me refletir sobre isso por um instante...* — Allow me to reflect on that for a moment...

The Golden Rule

Never become defensive. The moment you lose composure, you lose credibility. In Portuguese: *Quem perde a calma, perde o debate.*
