Polish phonology has distinctive features. Polish has 8 vowels (including nasals *a, e*) and a rich consonant system with palatal sounds (*s, z, c, dz*) and the notoriously difficult clusters (*prztyk, chrzan*). Stress is fixed on the penultimate syllable (*pe-NUL-ti-mate*), with exceptions in loanwords. Historical vowel alternations (*o/a: woda-woda*) reflect Proto-Slavic heritage. The voiced/voiceless consonant distinction is critical (*b/p, d/t, g/k*). Nasal vowels (*a, e*) are partially denasalized in modern speech. Understanding phonology explains many spelling conventions.
