Translation between Korean and other languages involves navigating a fundamental tension: foreignization preserves the source culture's distinctiveness, while domestication makes the text feel native to the target culture. Neither approach is universally correct — the choice depends on purpose, genre, and audience. A key challenge is 번역투 (translationese): the unnatural feel that results from overly literal translation. In Korean, this often manifests as misused particles, awkward nominalization, or calqued sentence structures. 문화적 동등성 (cultural equivalence) is more than word-matching: a Korean idiom like *미역국을 먹다* (literally "to eat seaweed soup" — meaning to fail an exam) cannot be directly translated. 현지화 (localization) goes beyond translation to redesign the entire cultural frame. At C2, you should be able to critically evaluate any translation and propose improvements with precise metalinguistic vocabulary.
자주 하는 실수

직역이 항상 나빠요직역은 경우에 따라 효과적일 수 있으나, 문화적 맥락을 무시하면 번역투를 낳습니다Absolute statements (항상) are inappropriate in nuanced translation discourse. The correct version presents conditional reasoning: direct translation can be effective in some contexts.
