Korean journalism has a distinct style shaped by the inverted pyramid structure and a tradition of formal, compressed language. Headlines compress clauses into noun-heavy strings without particles: *정부, 금리 인상 결정* (Government, interest rate hike decided). This headline grammar drops copulas, subjects, and endings to pack maximum information. News articles use the ~습니다 register throughout and prefer nominalized verbs as sentence cores: 발표하다 → *발표가 있었다* (there was an announcement). For quoting sources, Korean journalism uses ~(으)로 밝혔다 (stated), ~라고 전했다 (conveyed), or ~고 말했다 (said). Editorials (사설) differ from news articles: they use first-person plural *우리*, make evaluative claims, and may employ rhetorical questions. Mastering both registers — neutral news reporting and argued editorial — is the mark of C2 written fluency.
자주 하는 실수
대통령이 말했어요: 경제가 좋아질 거예요대통령은 경제 회복에 대한 낙관적 전망을 밝혔다Direct quotes and casual 말했어요 are inappropriate in Korean news style. Journalism uses reported speech with formal ~밝혔다 and nominalized summaries rather than quoted verbatim speech.
이 기사는 중요한 이야기예요이 기사는 핵심 쟁점을 조명하고 있습니다중요한 이야기 is vague. Journalism uses 핵심 쟁점을 조명하다 (to illuminate key issues) — specific and purposeful analytical language.
사람들이 화가 났어요시민들의 불만이 고조되고 있는 것으로 나타났습니다화가 났어요 is emotional and colloquial. News writing uses 불만이 고조되다 (discontent is escalating) and epistemic markers like 것으로 나타났다 (it appears that).
정부가 잘못했어요정부 정책에 대한 비판적 시각이 제기되고 있습니다잘못했다 is editorial opinion stated as fact. Journalism frames criticism as perspectives being raised (비판적 시각이 제기되다) to maintain objectivity.
