Korean has a rich system of speech levels that go far beyond everyday politeness. At C2 level, you must master literary Korean (문어체), used in formal writing, classical texts, and elevated speech. The 하오체 (하오 style) is a formal polite register used in traditional contexts, official announcements, and historical dramas — you'll hear it in period films and read it in formal essays. The 하게체 (하게 style) is similarly formal but carries a sense of educated authority, often used by scholars or elders addressing younger equals. Classical Chinese loan vocabulary (한자어) permeates these elevated registers, lending gravitas and precision. To achieve true C2 mastery, you must recognize these registers on sight, understand the social relationships they encode, and reproduce them naturally in written and formal spoken contexts. Practice reading historical novels and formal essays to internalize this elevated style.
