The particles 은/는 and 이/가 are among the most nuanced aspects of Korean. 이/가 marks the grammatical subject, often introducing new information or identifying something specifically. 은/는 marks the topic, often contrasting with something else or referring to known information.
Compare: 고양이가 먹었어요 (The cat [specifically] ate it — focus on the cat) vs 고양이는 먹었어요 (As for the cat, it ate — implying other animals may not have).
바로 adds precision: 바로 이 사람이에요 (This is the exact person). 정말/진짜 intensify emotionally. At C1 level, mastering 은/는 vs 이/가 is essential — even native speakers use them instinctively based on information flow. Practice by analyzing which element in a sentence is new vs known.

- 그 사람은 정말 열심히 했어요They really worked hard (emphasis on effort)
- 저는 괜찮은데, 그 사람은 힘들어해요I'm fine, but they're struggling (는 contrast)
- 누가 했어요? 제가 했어요Who did it? I did (이/가 identifies doer)
- 바로 지금 결정해야 해요You need to decide right now (바로 for immediacy)
- 그건 진짜 중요한 문제예요A truly important issue (진짜 for emphasis)
- 한국어는 어렵지만, 재미있어요Difficult but interesting (은/는 topic contrast)
자주 하는 실수
저가 했어요 (when answering 누가?)제가 했어요이/가 attaches to the noun; 저 + 가 = 제가 (contraction), not 저가
고양이가는 귀여워요고양이는 귀여워요 OR 고양이가 귀여워요You cannot stack 이/가 and 은/는 together; choose one based on context
바로 정말 맞아요바로 맞아요 OR 정말 맞아요바로 and 정말 have different functions; stacking both sounds redundant
이건 은 제 거예요이건 제 거예요 (이것은 제 거예요)이건 is already 이것+은; do not add 은 again
