Expressing uncertainty in Korean
C1 speakers use nuanced grammatical tools to hedge claims, signal doubt, and avoid overstatement. Three key patterns:
1. -ㄹ지 모르다 (may not know / might) Expresses uncertainty about an outcome or fact.
- 그 정보가 맞을지 모르겠다. *(I'm not sure whether that information is correct.)*
2. -(으)ㄹ 수도 있다 (could possibly) Acknowledges a possibility without committing to it.
- 그것이 사실일 수도 있다. *(That could possibly be true.)*
3. -는지 의심스럽다 (to doubt whether) Used to express genuine scepticism about something.
- 그 방법이 효과적인지 의심스럽다. *(I doubt whether that method is effective.)*
Register notes:
- -ㄹ지 모르다 is neutral and common in both speech and writing.
- -(으)ㄹ 수도 있다 softens a claim — ideal for diplomatic or careful speech.
- -는지 의심스럽다 is more critical and suits formal argumentation.
Use these forms to signal intellectual honesty and avoid making claims you cannot fully support.

자주 하는 실수
그것이 사실일지 모른다그것이 사실일지 모르겠다The pattern -ㄹ지 모르다 typically takes the first-person form 모르겠다 in speech to express personal uncertainty; 모른다 sounds overly objective.
효과가 있는지도 있다효과가 있을 수도 있다To express a possibility (could possibly be effective), use -(으)ㄹ 수도 있다, not the redundant -는지도 있다.
그 주장이 맞는지 의심합니다그 주장이 맞는지 의심스럽습니다-는지 의심스럽다 is the correct idiomatic form for doubting whether something is the case; 의심합니다 alone changes the nuance to actively suspecting.
사실일 수 있을지 모르겠다사실일 수도 있다This combines two uncertainty patterns redundantly; choose one: either -ㄹ지 모르겠다 or -(으)ㄹ 수도 있다.
결론을 내리기 이르다결론을 내리기는 이르다The topic-marking particle 는 after 내리기 is needed here for natural emphasis and contrast in this idiomatic expression.
