Navigating international negotiations in Korean requires diplomatic language that is precise yet flexible. The goal is to assert your position while leaving room for dialogue.
Key patterns:
- 양해해 주시기 바랍니다 — "Please understand / Please allow for..." — a polite way to request tolerance or leeway.
- 조율이 필요합니다 — "Coordination / adjustment is needed" — signals openness to compromise without conceding.
- 저희 측의 입장은... — "Our position is..." — clearly frames your stance in formal settings.
- 상호 이익이 되는 방향으로 — "In a mutually beneficial direction" — a classic diplomatic framing.
Politeness levels: Use 합쇼체 (formal polite) throughout: -ㅂ니다 / -ㅂ니까? endings for statements and questions.
Tips:
- Begin proposals with 먼저 (first) or 우선 (first of all) to sequence points clearly.
- Use 혹시 (by any chance) to soften requests: 혹시 다른 제안이 있으시면... (If you happen to have other proposals...)
