Shared Living: -기로 하다 (Agreeing to Do Something)
When sharing a home, housemates make agreements. The key structure is -기로 하다 — meaning to decide/agree to do something.
-기로 하다 (agreed / decided to)
- We agreed on something together: 청소는 매주 하기로 했어요 (we agreed to clean every week)
- 밤 11시 이후에는 조용히 하기로 해요 — let's agree to be quiet after 11pm
- 생활비는 반반 내기로 했어요 — we decided to split the living expenses fifty-fifty
Related patterns:
- -기로 약속했어요 — promised to do (stronger than 하기로)
- -아/어야 해요 — must do (house rule)
- 설거지는 바로 해야 해요 — the dishes must be washed right away
- -지 않기로 했어요 — agreed not to
- 음식을 방에 가져가지 않기로 했어요 — agreed not to take food to the room
Tip: Use -기로 하다 at the end of a house meeting to confirm agreements. It sounds mutual and respectful.
자주 하는 실수
청소 당번에 정하기로 했어요청소 당번을 정하기로 했어요청소 당번 is the object of 정하다, so it takes the object particle 을/를, not the location particle 에.
공용 공간에 시끄럽게 하지 않기로 했어요공용 공간에서 시끄럽게 하지 않기로 했어요For an action happening AT a place, use 에서, not 에. 에 marks a destination or static location.
늦게 들어올 때는 미리 말해늦게 들어올 때는 미리 말해 주세요말해 alone is plain 반말. With a roommate use the polite request 말해 주세요 (please tell me).
룸메이트가 너무 시끄럽어요룸메이트가 너무 시끄러워요시끄럽다 is a ㅂ-irregular adjective: ㅂ becomes 워 → 시끄러워요, never 시끄럽어요.
